Keep an eye out for SuperEnaLotto scams
You always need to stay vigilant online. Fraudsters are everywhere and they are constantly devising new ways to trick people into thinking they have won a huge prize. The formats of the scams vary but the aim is always the same – they are trying to get money out of you. They usually ask you for a ‘processing fee’ or ‘taxes’.
Always bear in mind that it is impossible for you to win a prize if you haven’t entered a lottery game or competition. No legitimate lotteries offer prizes based on randomly chosen emails or phone numbers. A legitimate lottery will also never ask you for a cent if you are the winner.
If you receive an email that claims you are a winner for something you know you haven’t entered, delete it! Do not click on any links, no matter how tempting. Don’t give away any personal information. If you have responded by accident, break off contact with the sender as soon as they respond to you. You can also report it to the police.
Another obvious giveaway is that the letters have bad grammar and spelling, and are on poor quality paper. They demand confidentiality to avoid detection by the police.
Fraudsters even have the audacity to call you. A ‘lottery official’ calls the victim to tell them the ‘good news’. They will try to extract a processing payment and/or bank details while the victim is still high on their life-changing news.
Social media is also an avenue which they make use of to target victims. They use Facebook to send direct messages to targets. Try your best not to disclose any personal information, ever!
Stay safe out there.
